Week of 3/12/18Over the past couple of weeks, you have been researching your Nonfiction Research Project topic. By now, you're close to becoming an expert on your topic! We'd like to hear your thinking about your topic.
For this week's post: Name your topic. Then name 1 interesting fact you learned about your topic. After that, write your thinking about that fact. What did it make you realize? How did it change your thinking? Structure your writing to have a topic sentence, all of your thinking about the fact, and then a closing sentence.

My topic is Hurricanes. A fact I learned is that it has to be atleast 80 degrees F, for a hurrincane to form. This helps me realize why hurricanes happen in more tropical and warm plces. I always thought that since the wind travels really fast and wind is its coldest usally when its strong so I thought the water needs to be cold for a hurricane to form. Now I realize why there are way more hurricanes in warm tropical place than freezing cold areas. This really changed my thinging about where and when hurricanes form.

I really like your fact because you not only wrote your fact down but you explained more and more about it that made it easier for me to understand exactly what you mean. Because I realized that you kept digging deeper and deeper., and that is a good thing. Because say I have no background knowledge about hurricanes what you wrote would be really helpful. Also they why you wrote it would also help get started and understand how they can write about Hurricanes.

how come John Jay wrote so little and Hsmilton so much? Cant they make the number for each person the same amount, with one person with one extra essay?hmmm...maby John Jay had the least time free, James Madison had medium free time, And Alexander Hamilton had, like, all the time in the world. This is probably not true though, maby they just all had to work VERY hard.

So my topic is about mummies and one thing thing that learned was the catacomb are used to bury mummies. Because at frist I thought that it was just some tunnel underground that were used in ancient times ONLY. But then I realized that in some places around the world have catacombs that they bury the died. That also surprised me because I just thought that the died would be put in grave and buried underground for hundreds of years. Also in catacombs you up the died on shelves and the died would just lay there for a very long time. But then when I kept reading I realized that that is was a culture thing not every place in the world has to do this. People do it in different ways. So in some places around the world just bury the died in graves others just lays them down on shelves underground in a catacomb. This proves that learning things can make you interested and want to read more and more.

My topic is the Navy. One interesting fact that I learned was that one of the biggest Navy ships is called an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier has a big helicopter landing platform so helicopters can lift off and land on them from the middle of the ocean. This made me realize that if the US was in a war and the enemy was shooting at an aircraft carrier with a plane on it, and the aircraft carrier started to sink, the plane could take off and bomb the enemy. That way some of the soldiers could get in the plane and save their lives. Also, aircraft carriers need close to 6,000 sailors to operate the ship and can fit 60 or more warplanes. This makes me realize that if an aircraft carrier sunk, that a lot of lives would be lost. These facts about aircraft carriers surprised me about how big and important an aircraft carrier is to the Navy.

My topic is dogs. One cool fact i know is that the most popular breed in america is the Labrador Retriver. I think that is really cool because my favorite breed of dog IS a Labrador Retriver! This is one of the most popular breeds because its a loyal breed and its is a awesome family pet. It is great with children! Also in the list with Golden Retrivers and German Shepards, labradors are one of the easist to train. But dogs are in the milatry, and the navy. Some are on the police force, also called the K-9 unit. They are called that because K-9 sounds like canine, a dogs scientific name. Dogs on lifegaurd duty sometimes jump out of hovering helicopters to save a drowning person. That is very brave. I couldnt do that! I really like my topic because i can learn a lot of things about dogs and maby one day i can perswade my parents to get a dog! Also, i want to volenteer in a dog shelter and it would really help if i knew things about them before hand.

One thing that I learned is that Adolf Hitler, leader of Germany and Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, made an agreement called the German- Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. They decided that they wouldn't fight each other and that Germany wouldn't invade the Soviet Union. They also decided to each invade Poland from a different side. Eventually the Germans would break this fact and invade the Soviet Union. That would be a big mistake eventually for the Germans. This is some information on the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact.

My topic is Greek Mythology. It's really interesting with all those legends and some gross stuff too. I've learned stuff about Zeus. Yes I know that he marries too many godesses. But did you know he has more than 120 kids! His favorite is Athena, godess of wisdom, war, and craft. But here's the gross part. His wife (NOT Hera) said that he would have a son even more powerful than him. So to prevent that he swallowed her alive. Yes, he ate his wife. I really wonder how he did that and how she tasted. And so 50 years later he got a really, really bad headache. So he let someone strike him with an axe and it cured his headache AND gave birth to Athena who POPPED OUT OF ZEUS' HEAD! I thought all of Zeus' kids were born the normal way. I first thought WHAT!? WHO WOULD EAT THEIR WIFE!? AND WITH HERA SHE'LL TURN ZEUS INTO A PANCAKE BEFORE HE EATS HER! But then I was relived that it's another lady. It's really cool how these stories help people learn things and they're also really cool to hear. I need to know more.

My topic is the revolutionary war. One thing I learned was that there was two battles of Trenton. This makes me realize that History could be important when you grow up because you might be on a game show an there is a question like that so some things that your teachers teach you about are really important if you really think about it. As you can see reading and writing about your topic is fun and it is helpful.

My topic is about pandas. One thing I learned is their is only 12 giant pandas left in the United States of America. This makes me realize that more people should care about pandas. Also if you try to hunt a panda don’t just leave it alone or just tell a person that helps pandas or just call somebody about animals they could put the panda in the zoo. Also in China their is a program that helps pandas. Also you would others not just the panda but the people who goes to the zoo could see pandas. Last in China pandas are peace.

My topic is octopus. One fact i learned was that when a male and a female mate the male takes off one of it arms that is different then the others and gives it to the female octopus for fertilizing. That made me really surprised how does it take it off and I know it will grow back but thats just weird . That made me think about octopuses differently. To conclude octopuses are very weird but interesting.

One interesting fact is that roller coasters were invented by people sliding down slippery slopes of ice.I think that is really cool because roller coasters are made out of wood and steel not ice! I actually thought roller coasters were made by people who invented roller skate, because some roller coasters are made on wheels.

I learned that we can not clone a dinosaur because first if we extracted DNA from a Dinosaur fossil that will only be a small genome of the Dinosaurs DNA.Secondly we would know were to replace missing Genomes with bird DNA since they are closely related.Third of all we cannot just inject Dinosaur DNA into a chicken egg and lie back and wait for your lets say your baby Apatosaurus to hatch the gg will be to small for it to hatch but an Ostrich egg might work.

topic is dinosaurs. One interesting fact I learned was that dinosaurs lived in Pangea which used to be a strip of land across the Arctic Ocean. This made me realize that I cannot just find dinosaur fossils in my backyard, when I was little I thought you could find fossils in your backyard, but now I know I cannot. It changed my thinking because I know as I read my book further fossils could be found in Chile, Utah and even America. I know I need to travel to these places if I want to find fossils.

My topic is astronomy far planets, one of my interesting facts interesting facts interesting fact I learn was that Jupiter has 63 moons and they used better telescopes and saw 4 more moons and also another one is that Saturn is lighter than water because it is full of hydrogen and helium and also was Supposed to be a star but it was to small to be a star so it is a planet. I think those facts were cool. It made me realize that if I want to be an astronomer I have to study really really hard. It changed my thinking by when I thought I had to only study allot of sience it was not just that I also have to study math. That is all about my topic

My topic is Dinosaurs. One interesting fact I learned about Dinosaurs is that there are about 300 species of Dinosaurs currently known. I think that there are not as many species of Dinosaurs compared to the number of known species of birds, mammals and spiders. For example there are 10,000 species of birds. It made me realize how much diversity there is amongst living creatures. I wonder how all this diversity occurred in nature. Was there only one species of Dinosaurs to start with and did all the other species of animals come later on?

I'm so happy because there will be no more orcas in Marine parks!!!!! yay! Ever since we been doing this project, I feel in love with orcas. Now my room is fill of Orca pictures. this is a shoutout to all the fourth Grade teachers... Thank you for this project!! You made me realize there is much more to Orcas that I knew. I hope you can understand why I picked orcas :)

My topic is chemistry and matter I learned that the ancient Greeks in 400 BC thought of the idea of atoms, and in the 1800's Dirmitri Mendeleyev, a Russian scientist, created the periodic table. My ideas on this fact were that I never thought that the Greeks would think about the idea of atoms this early in time. Also, I thought that the periodic table was created in America. I question this fact because how did Dirmitri Mendeleyev come up with the idea of a periodic table. This was called Early Matter.

My topic is killer whales. An interesting fact that I learned was that killer whales can't breathe in general. They really can't smell anything but, I guess they can breathe. My thoughts about this are " Wow this is pretty cool because, how would killer whales know what they're eating, what it tastes like. Anyway what does fish taste like in water? Well, I did read that killer whales are very smart and intelligent. It changed my thinking because I thought all mammals can sing. I would love too see what I come up with.

My topic is pandas. One thing that I learned about pandas were that poachers were illegally killing pandas. This made me realize that that was one of the reasons pandas were going extinct. It changed my thinking on pandas because at first I thought pandas were going extinct because of destruction and bamboo die-backs(don't worry, they are off the endangered list). Now I learned that pandas were going extinct because of poachers, destruction and bamboo die-backs.

Pyramids. One interesting fact I learned was that one block was 21 tons and they had to carry at least one block every 2 min. After reading that fact I realized it took a lot of hard work to make the pyramids without using modern technology that we use today.

My topic is astronomy. One interesting fact I learned is that when a massive star collapses on itself a black hole is formed. It changed my thinking because it made me go deeper in black holes and learn more about how they are formed. I also learned that for a star to form a black hole it has to be 40 times bigger than the sun.
