Poetry is fun and helps us create pictures in our minds as we read. This week, look for poetic imagery in your prose (regular book) reading. Select the words or phrases and explain how it sets a mood or paints a picture in your mind.
I will give you an example from the book I am reading this week, called A Wrinkle in Time: "In her attic bedroom, Margaret Murray, wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, sat on the foot of her bed and watched the trees tossing in the frenzied lashing of the wind. Every few minutes the moon ripped through them, creating shadows that raced along the ground." I can see Meg shivering in her cold bedroom in the middle of the night and I can hear the wind howling outside. The storm sounds angry (frenzied lashing of the wind) and the mood seems spooky, like something bad is going to happen. I notice the author is using personification with the moon and the shadows (using the words ripped and raced.) Share a few words from your book and explain how the author is using imagery or figurative language to paint a picture. Some examples of figurative language are: Personification (giving life like qualities to something that is not alive) Alliteration (repeating the beginning sounds of words) Simile (comparison using the words "like" or "as." Metaphor (saying something IS something else) We know this is a tough blog question but we also know you all can do this! Give it some thought and be on the look out when you are reading.

One thing I found was a simile in the book Class Dismissed. The simile is "a lunch without a dessert is like a classroom without a pencil." What I think that's saying is both are not good without the second part.

I'd have to agree with you, but it can also mean that it is as hard without a pencil, or whoever the character is, they can also mean to say that it is easy without a pencil in a classroom as well. :)

What mood this sets me into is peaceful because the character maybe has gone through alot so they get some time to kick back and relax because they maybe going through alot of stress in school . She might be thinking : I have to study then do my math homework then do my reading. when she is relaxed it will help her get through every single problem that they are going through currently

A phrase from my book The Lost Hero was that it said "the blade trembled in her hand" this helped me paint a picture in my mind and set a mood because it painted the picture that she had a sword and it was shaking in her hand. This set the mood because it set the mood of being afraid and also being scared of what they are saying.

I am starting to read the book, "Savvy" by Ingrid Law. One phase I found was, "I had liked the living down south on the edge of the land, next to the pushing pulling waves. It was so hard-hard like the pavement the first time I fell of my pink two-wheeler" the phrase talks about evens and odds, she girl loved the area to move, but she thought it was hard to move, she even compared this to her falling of her pink two-wheeler on the pavement! If I find more, I will keep on blogging to let you guys know.

My book is Goose Bumps and it painted a picture in my mind about how the character felt. It described how a boy felt being scared when he started changing and began to get very hairy. Also the author said many things to go along with what it was trying to say but it did not rhyme but I still understood what was happening in the book.

One metaphor I found in "The One And Only Ivan" was" Stella is a mountain. Next to her I am a rock, and Bob in a grain of sand. This paints picture in my mind of how Stella is big, Ivan is medium, and Bob is small. Mountains are huge so that would be Stella, rocks are medium sized so that is Ivan, and a grain of sand is tiny so that is Bob. Int his book the author put a lot of figurative language. I think she did this to let the reader understand the book better.

In my book The Pudding Problem I found a simile. It was "I am living the life like if I was in Paradise. This made me think that Figurative language are stories would be boring and you wouldn't want to read books anymore because they didn't have any detail in them.

I am reading a book called, Maybe A Fox. This painted a picture in my mind. A fox named Senna had just gave Jules one of the character a clue of the missing Sylvie. Sylvie was Jules's older sister. Sylvie had run into the woods and got lost. The clue was Sylvie's headband. Where could've Senna had find it? The picture in my mind was: a fox had lust dropped a faded blue headband in front of Jules. Jules picks up the headband and looks at the headband, then at Senna.

My book is called The End Or Something Like That and this book in particular caught my attention because it painted a picture of what my character felt. When Kim died I could picture Emmy sobbing and feeling sad that she had just lost her one and only friend. Even though these don't rhyme I can still picture everything that is happening since the author described it so well.

This paints a picture in my mind when the Father went up he was so sad his looked invisible and he went in his office, and stayed there the whole night and never came out. That is the way I see it.

My book is '' Nightbird '' and the way it set a mood is that I read a line out of it and it said '' Kids may stand at the edge of the lawn and listen to the doves, they may dare one another to go up the porch, but they run away when one of those rare black Sidwell owls flies across the distance, and they never go inside.'' The mood in this text is haunting, frightened, and scary. I got this mood from the way the text was and how it sounded when I said it out loud.

In my book Warriors, it painted a picture in my mind. When I read the sentence ''This is our territory'' The Thunder clan said. Then after that I read the sentence ''The River clan was getting chased down by the Thunder clan'' The mood that painted in my mind was well i don't know the word but it's like scary and you want to know what is going to happen next. The picture it painted in my mind was a big clan of cats (River clan) getting chased by another clan of cats. (Thunder clan)

In my book Hoot, Chuck Muckle was frustrated with a boy called Mullet Fingers because he wedged himself into the owl burrow to prevent Muckle's company from building a pancake house. Muckle said "Mr. Branitt, please uproot this stringy weed." The author used a metaphor for better imagery. He compared the boy to a weed because weeds are annoying pests and are hard to get rid of and he also happened to be burred in the ground with only his head sticking out.

In the past few weeks, I read a book called" Little House on the Prairie." This book is about an American pioneer family life. The author wrote the sentence " And all over the land, where the grasses waved and murmured under the wind, thousands of little dickie-birds clung with their tiny claws to the blossoming weeds and sang their thousands of little songs. This sentence uses personification and paints a picture in my mind that lots of small creatures make noise in the daytime. The author described that the grass came into life and started murmuring and give an picture of wind blowing the grass.

In 'Winter according to Humphrey, the mood is bright and happy. When the book said that Humphrey was shivering, that painted a picture in my mind showing that Humphrey didn't like the cold weather because hamsters only like room temperature. Also, Humphrey said that the humans needed to cover his cage with a cloth of some sort. This shows that he was very cold but he was still happy.

So in my book Water Balloon By :Audrey Vernick I found a very descriptive part it said "It was a wet and brightly colored happiness of the splatted, splattered water balloon variety.'" That sentence made a picture that looked like there were all broken water balloons everywhere, the driveway of Marley's house was all drenched in water and Leah and Jane were screaming and laughing.
